アリストテレス

アリストテレス

アリストテレス（Aristotles、紀元前384年 - 紀元前322年）、マケドニア出身の古代ギリシャの哲学者。プラトン学派を拡張発展させペリパトス学派を形成した。

修辞学関係

修辞学とは自分の意見を公の場で、いかに人々に印象深く心に残すためには、どのように発表すれば良いかを研究する学問をいう。

• 存在しそうな不可能はいつも、信じられがたいが本当は存在する可能性よりも好まれる::"A likely impossibility is always preferable to an unconvincing possibility."

• 全体は、始めと中間と終わりからなる。『詩学』

"A whole is that which has beginning, middle and end."

• 悪は人々を一致させる。

"Evil draws men together."

政治学関係

• 一般にさらに良いことものを望む人たちは、祖先が得た以上のものを望む。

"Again, men in general desire the good, and not merely what their fathers had."

• 欲望は満たされないことが自然であり、多くの者はそれを満たすためのみで生きる。

"It is the nature of desire not to be satisfied, and most men live only for the gratification of it."

• 法律は社会の秩序であり、良い法律は良い秩序である。

"Law is order, and good law is good order."

• 人は本性において政治を行う動物である。

"Man is by nature a political animal."

• 自然には何の無駄もない。

"Nature does nothing uselessly."

• 民主制国家の基礎は自由である。

"The basis of a democratic state is liberty."

• 最もよく統治される者が統治するべきだ。

"They should rule who are able to rule best."

形而上学関係

• 全ての者は生まれながらに知恵を求める。

"All men by nature desire knowledge."

倫理学関係

• プラトンは私の友である。しかし、彼よりも真実を私は友とする。

"Plato is my friend, but the truth is more my friend."

• 良い人であることがいつも良い市民であることと同じとは限らない。

"It is not always the same thing to be a good man and a good citizen."
