ホレーショ・ネルソン　（1758-1805）

(Horatio Nelson) イングランド海軍提督、子爵。アメリカ独立戦争やナポレオン戦争で活躍した。

• ひとりにしてくれ。両脚と片腕はまだ大丈夫だ。外科医を早く呼んで手術するようにいってくれ。右腕がだめなことはわかっている。だからなるべく早く切断したほうがいい。

  Let me alone: I have yet my legs and one arm. Tell the surgeon to make haste and his instruments. I know I must lose my right arm, so the sooner it's off the better.

1797年7月24日、サンタ・クルズ・デ・テネリフェで攻撃を受けて負傷した際に。

• まず勝利だ、それから好きなように勝利を利用すればいい。

1798年8月1日、ナイル河の戦いの前に。

• 明日のこの時間には、私は貴族になっているか、ウェストミンスター行きかだ。

1798年8月1日、ナイル河口アブキール湾にナポレオンのエジプト遠征艦隊を発見して。ナイル河の戦い直前の発言。ウェストミンスター寺院はイングランドで国葬が行われる場所。

  I am myself a Norfolk man.

1798年、グレートヤーマス帰還時の歓迎に際して。ノーフォークはネルソンの出身地。

• 諸君、敵が間違った方針で動き始めたら、あまり早く手を出してはいけない。

• 風と天候には命令できない。

トラファルガーでネルソンが死に瀕して艦長トマス・マスターマン・ハーディにいった有名な言葉。ハーディはネルソンの頬と額にキスした。

• 神に感謝する、私は義務を果たした。

  Thank God, I have done my duty.

ネルソン最後の言葉
